Warm, sulfurous stream in Beitou.

A portion of the 1913 Japanese colonial public bathhouse, later the Beitou Hot Spring Museum.

It looks like a series of abandoned warehouses but this is actually the Huashan Creative Park near the Taipei Artist Village. Inside these dreary buildings are cafes, galleries, and open workspaces for installations and exhibits.

People meet up for work inside a warehouse in the Huashan Creative Park.

A man hangs a new show in a gallery in the Huashan Creative Park. He later asked me to submit a photo to a show he's helping out with but I can't read the entry form!

Chuck! Huashan Creative Park.

Children's book author Jimmy Liao has gained a lot of popularity both inside and outside of China since his first publication in 1998. His 33rd book, The Starry Starry Night, is being celebrated at a gallery in the Huashan Creative Park. A variety of artists got together to present the characters and themes of Liao's books in a fresh, multimedia setting. His books have also been turned into music albums, stage plays, and feature films.

Devotees leave food offerings on the altars of temples both large and small. Here someone even left a bag of Lays potato chips.

A man lights his incense in Longshan Temple in Danshui (not the same Longshan that is in the Wanhua District of Taipei).

Markets fill the dark alleys around Lane 95, one of the other parts of Danshui. But nothing is too narrow for the local lorry drivers (two-lane driving consists of a game of chicken as to who has to back up first).

A mom and son stroll down Lane 95 in Danshui.

Robot flaggers can be seen at construction sites throughout Taipei (they even mechanically wave those little flags).

  1. i wish there were a way to comment on individual photos! robot flaggers -- SO bizarre. The lorry driver pictures of Lane 95 bring back memories of my dad and I selling my things off before I emigrated... What flavour were the Lays chips? Hehe. Love the juxtaposition of the sculpture with the outside architecture in the Creative Park cafe shot.
